Angels, Be Here Now

A Poem

By Jennifer Elam

Angels we have heard on high,
sweetly singing o’er the plains…and the mountains in reply, echoing…

I google “angels” and want to see what others are thinking;
I find football, bourbon, “angels envy”, “angels evil souls”, “angels and demons”.

Suddenly, I realize again, I must be very different from most people;
Angels for me are those who accompany and protect me.

I walk on the path, alone by the creek, daily;
I often get images of Jesus accompanying me, and…

Angels on both sides of me, protecting me.

There are people in my life, who accompany me during hard times;
I call them angels. I need human angels to help protect me too.

Who are called to be the hands and feet and voices of God?
They are the angels of the earth. Who are you, angels of the earth?

Angels we have heard on high, human angels, stepping up.
Where are you? Can you be here, and singing o’er the plain?

I hear the mountains echoing in reply; humans, please step up,
the earth needs you to accompany and protect her and each other.

Humans, follow the angels, we need you on all sides of us, protecting us.
Angels with wings, angels with feet and hands, join together.
We need you. I need you. Can you hear? Can you step up? Can you be here now?
Angels on all sides of us, of me accompanying and protecting us, me.

And the mountains in reply, echoing…
